Individual & Family Health Coverage
Affordable Care Act "OBAMACARE"
The first step to understanding "Obamacare" is to realize that it is NOT health insurance.
"Obamacare" is a law designed to assist individuals, who otherwise wouldn't be able to aquire health insurance, to obtain health coverage based on their income. In other words, it is not a government insurance program such as Medicare or Medicaid.
With the new Healthcare Reform, depending on your state, you might be able to access your state's Medicaid program or get enrolled in a health plan offered by one of the private insurance companies through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Be aware, "Obamacare" is not necessarily for people with low income. If an individual has low income, he or she may qualify for TAX CREDITS offered by the new healthcare reform depending on the amount of dependents that person claims in his/her tax returns. However, in the state of Florida, an individual or a family with income below the requirements of the federal government, may not be eligibile for tax credits.
Ideally, that same individual would qualify for Florida's Medicaid. Unfortunate though, the state of Florida hasn't agreed to the Medicaid expansion, which limits the amount of people elegible for the state's Medicaid.
